The tail end of July can only mean one thing: school is creeping back and we can sometimes feel as though our summer has escaped us. Never fear! Today I am giving you 5 fun, and inexpensive things you can do before summer is over.
#1 Hit your local library.
I know we live in the day and age of Ebooks (hey, I even wrote a few), but there is something super refreshing about grabbing a guilty pleasure summer read from the library. For starters, you get to work on your people skills, which are oh so important. Second, you have a limited amount of time to get through your book. Yeah, you could re-check it, but that would be admitting defeat. Having a set amount of time makes it an even better idea to grab a cold tea, a favorite chair, and bask in the sun while catching up with our favorite characters.
#2 We all scream for ice cream.
Summertime is the very best time for ice cream. Prove me wrong. Ditch the restrictive diet and head out to your favorite ice cream shop. If you have a great local shop (you know, with the weird flavors and never ending line), make a date to get there asap. If frozen yogurt is more your style, grant yourself permission to pull in and indulge a bit. Really savor the moment and slow down to enjoy a bit of childhood. We live a bit sandwiched between Galveston and Houston, so on either end I can make a trip for some old timey ice cream or a root beer float, OR enjoy some decadent gelato at my favorite cafe. Whatever you choose, make an experience out of it and drop any guilt off at the door.
#3 Invite some friends on a picnic.
This is one of my favorite things that I never do. Really, once I get out there I love it, but I just never think of it. For Father’s Day this year we took my dad and my hubby to a local vineyard and packed up all the Greek fixins I could make. I made a large Greek bowl with salad, hummus, olives, cheese, crackers, etc. We also packed a few games and spent several hours playing, connecting and laughing. Whether you love to cook or prefer to simply stop by the store for some pre-chopped fruit, get together a spur of the moment picnic and have some major summer fun.
#4 Check with your local parks and recreation to see what fun things they’re hosting.
Local parks are really trying to provide fun, and mostly free, activities during the summer. Our local town center even offers free fitness classes and one of my besties teaches a free POUND class for them a couple times a week. This makes for a totally awesome Girls Night Out AND you get to meet some neighbors you never knew you had before. To find your local park, look up your city Parks and Recreation department and search for events.
#5 Drive on in.
Drive in theaters have been revamped over the last decade and are still a super fun thing to do on a Friday night. Any night really, but you get my point. What used to be reserved as a make out station (see That 70’s Show) is now a family friendly venue to get away from the stress of the world. Many drive ins also offer discount days and double features. SO, pack up friends and family and get ready to remember this summer! And hey, if you want to make out with your honey during the movie that’s totally cool too…..just send your kids elsewhere.
There are LOADS we didn’t even get to, like going to the beach, swimming all day, eating summertime foods, etc. Be creative and think outside of your normal box.
My mom always used to say, “Make memories”. And that is my challenge to you. Go out and make some memories for yourself this summer.
xoxo, Michelle
